After much anticipation and weeks of planning, our first family member came to see our island and new home!
Geoff picked up Mum at the airport on Tuesday, 18th September at 5:30pm and after I got home from watching the kiddies, we all had a wonderful first dinner together and caught up on everything.
What better way to introduce Mum to island life than to have her hike up one of the tallest hills (Goat Hill) the next morning? Nothing like being thrown in the deep end! Still, the views of Buck Island almost didnt cancel out the fact it was stinking hot and the bugs were out in full force, so we cut our hike short and decided to make plans for the Cruzan Rum factory tour instead. :-)
Geoff set up a VIP tour for us with Karen, the Pavilion manager. It was just the two of us, as we were led up and down stairs, in and out of rooms with bubbling vats as we learnt all about the rum-making process. The one line about the description of what fresh yeast is in the first vat still sticks with me - "We call it the Yeast Hotel....all the tiny, single little yeast cells just keep multiplying and multiplying because they have so much energy" LOL
At the end of the tour, we were treated to a choice of different rums, also available in cocktails if we wanted.
